When the balance of the vagina is disrupted by the overgrowth of these bacteria, another bacteria (Lactobacilli) is unable to perform its normal function. This bacterium normally provides a natural disinfectant that helps maintain a healthy balance of microorganisms in the vagina. Some dairy products contain them.
